House LGBT Caucus Applauds Obama Administration, Health Department for Ensuring Transgender Americans Have Equal Access in Health Care

Washington, DC – The Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus today thanked the Obama Administration and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for a groundbreaking final rule ensuring that transgender people have equal access to health care all across the United States.

“On behalf of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, I want to thank President Obama, Secretary Burwell and the entire Department of Health and Human Services for this incredible final rule,” said LGBT Equality Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI). “Sadly, too many transgender Americans hesitate to seek health care because they are afraid of discrimination.  This rule will make it clear that access to health care isn’t for a select few, but open to all.  What the Obama administration has done today will literally save lives.  Releasing this rule in the same day as the Department of Education’s guidance on transgender students’ access to school facilities and the same week as the lawsuit against North Carolina, the Obama administration is sending a clear message today:  this country will not tolerate discrimination against transgender people.  Period.”

“I am proud to have voted for the Affordable Care Act which included a first-of-its-kind civil rights protection for transgender people,” said Transgender Equality Task Force Chairman Rep. Mike Honda (CA17-Silicon Valley).  “I applaud President Obama’s administration for finalizing regulations today that will prohibit sex discrimination under the ACA.  It is an unfortunate reality that transgender people are denied health care for simply being who they are.  This rule takes a step toward equality for all transgender people in our nation.”
